John Sutherland

John Sutherland is the Lord Northcliffe Professor Emeritus of Modern English Literature at UCL, and has spent most of his academic career working up to that august post. ‘Emeritus’ is the Latin for ‘without merit’. John has written many books on many subjects (including Is Henry V a War Criminal—OUP) and most recently, Stars, Cars and Crystal Meth (Faber, that noise you hear is T. S. Eliot spinning in his grave). Coming in September is a book on what happens to your literary response when you lose your smell.

Established in 2010, Penzance Literary Festival has grown into one of the UK's favourite festivals for authors and visitors.
