West End and international headliner and Pantomime Dame Iestyn Edwards will be talking about his memoir ‘My Tutu Went AWOL’. In this entertaining session, he will tell the “bonkers” story of barely surviving Iraq and Afghanistan and the unlikely friendship that came out of his time there.
‘My Tutu Went AWOL’ is about Iestyn’s accidental audition for Combined Services Entertainment to take his drag ballerina character on tour across the warzones of Iraq and Afghanistan. He flew out on Orville the Cartoon Albatross, chivvied officers and assorted loudmouths onstage to imitate the panicked flight of Odette, the Swan Queen. He had a dressing-down for drying his ballet tights on the anti-blast wall and demanding his custard creams back from the President of Estonia. And he took an unplanned flight himself when he was lippy onstage to a front-line Commando, who – fuming – dumped Iestyn on the turret of the Naughty Tank.
Iestyn has been going down a storm at venues ranging from Port Isaac Festival to Blackpool Tower Ballroom. And audiences from the Royal Marines to the WI have loved hearing about Iestyn’s trip and his ‘oddest of odd couple friendships’ with the Commando. Classical ballet, opera, tallish stories: you’ll have heard nothing like this before!
