This Christmas, support your local bookshop
Our first guest post on this blog is from Rachael Howorth who, together with her husband, James, owns The Edge of the World Bookshop in Penzance. If, like me, you’re still deciding which books to buy for friends and family for Christmas – or you’re thinking about indulging in a new book or two for yourself (!) – why not head for 23 Market Jew Street.
Browsing in a real bookshop is a great way to get inspiration, and to discover authors you may not have come across before. For those of you who don’t live in Penzance, search here to find your nearest independent bookshop.
The Edge of the World Bookshop has been the official bookseller for the Penzance Litfest since it opened in 2012 and has enjoyed seeing the Litfest grow from strength to strength during that time.
When we took over the bookshop it was at a time when e-readers and online competition meant that nationally, two bookshops were closing every week and many of our family and friends thought we were totally mad. A bookshop had been at no 23 Market Jew Street for forty years and we were hopeful that we could make it work. It’s great that the independently minded people of West Penwith have managed to keep their indie bookshop when most towns haven’t. We can only survive with the support of the book-buying community and we thank you for it. If you are a regular at the Edge of the World Bookshop then you will know we love nothing more than chatting about books. We can order almost any book and most books ordered come in the following day. When you are shopping locally you are keeping the High Street alive and helping to create local jobs.
As a supporter of the Litfest you already know the value in being part of the book-loving community and talking to people about books is a great way to find new authors to try, share ideas and feel part of something. We aim to make pottering around our shop a relaxing and enjoyable experience and you are likely to find amazing treasures you didn’t know existed or fabulous gifts. We are stacked full of present ideas and spend a lot of our time sourcing the most fascinating and beautiful books we can find and we always have present ideas if you want some inspiration.
If you haven’t been inside for a while, try popping to see us with your Christmas list and we will try our best to find some great books to inspire you.
